Malta
History and Culture
A great place to start exploring Mdina with life sized figures, sights, smells and sounds to recreate a fitting tribute to the brave religious order.
The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights of Malta, have left a very significant visual stamp on the island of Malta. From the fortifications of our current capital Valletta, the medieval capital Mdina and numerous other architectural gems, it is impossible to overstate their significance in Malta's history. Their legacy prevailed amongst the Maltese cultural, religious and civic ways for centuries.
The Knights of Malta cultural attraction is a tribute to this brave religious order. Over one hundred life size figures depict the life and times of the knights which culminates into the Great Siege. Dramatic lighting, sound effects and reminiscent smells greatly add to the experience which can be enjoyed in a simultaneous digital headsets thirteen-language commentary!
The 34 tableaux cover a full spectrum of vignettes of life during the 200-year rule of the Knights of Malta over these islands. In a still-life pageant, full-size figures of the Knights and Grandmasters from the eight Langues, symbolised by the eight-pointed cross, appear in their various roles.
The attraction is situated in the original gunpowder vaults in the battlements of Mdina. A number of evocative linked chambers set the mood for this historic exhibition.
Opening times: 10.00hrs to 16.30hrs daily. Available in 13 languages.
